On this day, in 1963, Lester B. Pearson was sworn in as Canada’s 14th prime minister. Why should you care? Well, many of the privileges that Canadians enjoy today such as universal health care, student loans, and pension plans are due to this man.
Pearson was a great man. He won the noble peace prize for mitigating the strenuous tensions over the Suez Canal in 1957, he was a diplomat, a historian and one amazing Prime Minster. Also, during the First World War, he served overseas in Europe.
Many of the freedoms and great things I enjoy today, as a Canadian, I owe to this man and his 5 years as Prime Minister. From my health care to my student loans which is putting me through university. Thank God, for this nation. It is for this reason, primarily why I see Pearson as one of the greatest Canadians of all time, right next to Terry Fox and MacDonald . He has given people the chance to live better lives in a great country.
I was not born in Canada, in fact, I was naturalized when I was younger. But I see myself just as much a Canadian, and hopefully others see me as one too.
